It gives a clean appearance with no fringes or lose ends; your scarf won't be unbalanced, and, it's easy to get on and off. There is no back or front--only an endless variety of ways to wear...always fresh, always warm and cozy. I line the wooly parts with a jersey rib knit so it feels cool and smooth on the wearers's skin--but warms up quickly due to such high quality wools in the piecing. MORE TO COME, get in touch if you'd like to own one today!

It feels great to be at the helm of my MUK empire once again; giving time and energy to my work is extremely rewarding. These goods are imbued with positivity, artisanal quality, and total one-off guarantees!

Muk for your hair!

I have always been a fabric pin kind of gal--but now I've evolved slightly to creating the ribbon flower design to clip into your do! I always try to reign myself in to become more focused. What are your secrets to being more disciplined? Well, I try and forgive my laziness of the past--embrace each new day, take advantage of moments and surround myself with inspiring, working folks. People working on their own projects and collaborating, making a network of handmade. The whole process is so rewarding once the finished product sits on my desk looking so finished, clean and complete. I love that I am making something from what would otherwise be "trash." I know "up-cyling" may be commonplace now but that doesn't make it any less valid or awesome...It's so nice to create each little work of art, isolating an image or some text and anticipating the little card pocket going on to have a life of its own--brightening up someone's day and making them smile.

Fancy Flowers--bringing back the brooch

Well, it's happened, Muk Designs has arrived! Featured at Wolfbait and B-girls for the Fall 2011 season. You can shop the Collections at Wolfbait and B-girls 3131 W. Logan Blvd. The Chi. Teeny Tiny envelopes, and this actual brooch are available for purchase, and this is just the beginning. I began developing these brooches as "winning" pins with ribbons (see Facebook: muk designs") so you can find those as well. I re-vamped the look with this 3D floral version as an idea for another company and then I thought--wait a minute, this is a Muk Design and it should be sold as one! So I approached Jenny And Shirley and was warmly welcomed into the Wolfbait family--there is NO STOPPING ME NOW! Look for more consignment deals and new designs in the coming weeks. If you like Muk Designs shop the Etsy store: Mukster and "like" my Facebook page--and please comment and keep in touch! I use vintage fabrics and buttons, up-cycling whenever possible. The lace, ribbons and notions are often from my life-long passion of collecting ephemera and then finding the perfect application--turning these items into works of ART.

2011--I am back.

So, where have I BEEN? well, that is a very long story. The important thing is that I am back, making, and have been making all along. Currently I am starting a new quilt project, always a fun time. I find myself tracing, cutting, piecing an sewing, until I am falling asleep on my feet. This is for the baby next door who is being baptized--he's a boy so my big challenge is keeping it "masculine enough to pass." Gender in relationship to design is just a social construct so of course I am in the I don't know what you call it, "liberal camp?" The piece in the picture is the center--I created the block and then rotated it 4 ways--it's abstract with a sensibility of symmetry--to my mind.

Embroidered Pillowcase -- Fall

Have I blogged about these embroidered pillowcases yet? I don't think so. I bought the vintage, king size cases is Alton, IL where there is a whole lovely row of antique shops in old buildings that are cavernous and beautiful. Next, I over-dyed them in a "blue wash." Finally I chose some motifs and embroidered a Spring and Fall version as a set for a wedding gift. Ta Da! I love the texture, and hand of this personalized gift--hope they wear them out!

Postcard art...as quilt?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 224px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/So7gyLPsVMI/AAAAAAAAAH8/fvuYUXKAdrI/s320/asleep1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372478558116271298" />
You know what would be really cool? To blow up a post card image into an art quilt. How would one go about doing this do you suppose? I would scan it and plot it out with a grid--then somehow reproduce the image onto fabric?? But as quilt squares? I don't know--or weave it as tapestry--or just fabric paint it on? I just love the colors and the composition of this card and think that it deserves to be more than just a postcard I sent to someone in a postcard exchange where I got very little in return--but enjoyed the creative process and the act of giving art through the mail very much. Does anyone want to work on an art exchange? I am actually long over due on the completion of a piece from my last exchange--, ahhh maybe I should work on that and then blog the finished results--I am pretty far along --its a long cabin art quilt that incorporates found objects. Did ya'll know that I love washers--any size and fabrication from plastic to copper--they are so fun to sew on to things!

Hardware, its almost as titillating as office supplies and stationary--maybe equally so. My art is a direct result of me being a pack rat and a collector of objects--lately I have heard this type of stuff referred to as "ephemera" which I suppose is what it is--but its being justified as a legitimate category of things--like its ok to have inspirational objects floating in your living space--that's ephemera--embrace it!

Gilda

Here's Gilda, she came to life last December. She lives with Bruno, 2 boys, 2 cats, and a lady named V. This style of doll is totally unique for me. I was scaling things down a bit in order not to be overwhelmed since dolls can take days of work. Her ensemble is simple yet unique, Her woolen scarf is embellished with sequins, the lace trim makes rib knit into a "flirty frock." I took liberties with permanent Sharpie, and kept the palette rich, jewel and mustard toned, as it was holiday time. I believe she was very well received.

Morning Glory Quilt

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/Sobp7O5iFvI/AAAAAAAAAHU/eXaHSItdwhE/s320/KUBLAQUILT.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370236809506854642" />
This quilt is super fun I think, I made a point of making it kind of psychedelic. It was hard to do b/c the pieces have round edges-and so the piecing didn't lay completely flat. Plus I didn't know the hand quilting trick then about hiding the knots, so the back of the quilt has the tiny finished-end knots on its soft flannel surface. Alas, we live and learn. Its important to always ask questions, and to listen. It lives across the street at our neighbor's house and hopefully gets used often by their beautiful son.

Always an inspiration

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 257px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/SoXQYokcv1I/AAAAAAAAAHM/RqX_k6zpacU/s320/3249013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5369927252334919506" />
Just soak her up--I retracted the post I originally wrote--so I'll simply give you Frida's image as inspiration on this glorious Friday.

Clothes horse

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/SoNfElsgK4I/AAAAAAAAAG0/BXuLFDorETU/s320/sailerbuttonshirt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5369239713198648194" />
Well, I wore something that I made to work today and received a lot of compliments and "is that Anthropologie?" so that felt good--its a sort of smock dress in a linen blend fabric. So I decided to highlight garments today on the blog. I made a whole series of these cap sleeve sweatshirts two years ago and I still have some. I have tons of fabric too so I was hoping to make a little somethin'-somethin' soon probably just for myself, but who knows? I think this great young friend of mine, the daughter of a former co-worker owns this shirt, bought it at the show at the Cornelia Arts building that I did just before I started working for Sears. Speaking of Sears which is like speaking of Kmart, the past two days at work the NY clothing design team has been holding a trunk sale at work and Kmart duds seemed to be selling like hotcakes:

http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/c_10151_10104_Clothing_Women%27s

We do have some pretty cute things at very competitive prices for any fashinistas out there reading, (Jordan).

Anyway--Making clothes can be mucho fun when it works, and these shirts that I designed were the largest run of any garment that I have ever made...what do you think?

Scary Lady...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 215px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/SoFguPGDwII/AAAAAAAAAGs/K9YRBybUrk8/s320/scary1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368678578244534402" />
Sometimes art is for art's sake only, and it can't be made to please everybody. I picked up this postcard in a wacky, eclectic, antiques type place somewhere near the Welsh border between England and Wales, Hay on Wye actually that's the name--They had this mannequin in their shop and also made a series of postcards and who knows what else with her likeness. All I did was doll her up a bit using flowers cut out from the Papersource catalogue ("do something creative...") some washers, a bolt, and a lovely rhinestone teardrop right in between her deranged eyes. I love this piece, and have enjoyed doctoring up existing postcard images ever since. I actually sent out 6 or so in a postcard exchange that was organized by another Sarah, however the cards I received in return, if I got one at all, were truly disappointing! So that's when I decided to start sending out the watercolors to whoever "raised their hand" or to whoever I felt I needed to reach out and touch. Snail mail has just gone by the wayside, and I have to say I am still in the denial stage, I'm just not ready to say goodbye.

Bruno

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/SoCv6Ns9AoI/AAAAAAAAAGA/vNYYUO0FHSo/s320/Bruno.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368484170471113346" />
Totally unrelated to the Sasha Baron Cohen movie Bruno, I created this hot stud of a doll to be Gilda's near and dear one--you'll meet Gilda later--as part of my revamped blog postings, I am choosing to post my wares totally out of the order in which I fabricated them. I just chose something from the past 12 months and pop it up here so ya'll know what I've been up to. A new stragey of mine is to choose a random quilt block from a book I have with the patterns for all of the pieces--and go ahead and make just one 12" x 12" block. Of course the quilt shown uses a smaller block that I developed into one the size of 1/4 of this quilt and then joined those four together and added a border--It is roughly 50% flannel in the pieced portion, and for me, I just really liked this palette. I am more inspired by palette than I have the strength of composition. My niece just received a new quilt from her maternal granny that kind of blew my mind because rather than using blocks at all it was assembled in strips or rows of randomly cut yet uniform pieces all 1940's repro. Her binding was flawless with tiny mitered corners, it was only 1/4" and I believe hand finished on the back??? Not sure. Anyway new baby Clara Rose is the proud owner of this quilt and I think she'll enjoy it despite my rudimentary status as an "outsider" yet zealous quilter.

Little guy

I have been painting postcards and sending them off to friends and acquaintances randomly and by request. I enjoy painting, and have a soft spot for snail mail. Its tactile, thoughtful, good mail is like a small gift, and its a way of making a personal connection that in an increasingly digital world, is something the recipient can touch that I once touched--I guess that's the same thing as tactile. Anyway--if you want to receive an art card email me your address and I will be happy to oblige.

sara@mukdesigns.com

great commission to start the new year

he he. So I was commissioned to make a Danny Mansmith Doll. Ta da! It's really different from what I ordinarily do, 1st off, I don't usually make dolls in the likeness of anyone, 2nd they usually have crazy hair, and lastly, this is a boy doll, so no hourglass bodice shape-he is a rounded off triangle with a big bald head and striking blue eyes. Danny is so creative and unique the possibilities were really endless when it came to wardrobe and accessories, but I am not so great with too many choices. In the end, I tried to mix texture, and color, to create the best combination visually-so the doll will continue to be interesting and "new" for his viewers. I am off commissions now for awhile, I have to finish the Chuppah in February, and then I will be doing work for the pleasure, enjoyment, and education of moi! The etsy store will happen in 2008, but the real challenge so far has been adjusting to my new job! As you can see, I am working from home this Friday! Excellent perk, even if its not every week. The rental car, and I were blasted from all that driving in the extreme cold: 25 degrees below 0 F !!!!!

Hi!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/R2mLzydBFFI/AAAAAAAAAD4/XP3JBx_dd0o/s320/Qaardvark2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145797771080569938" />

Talulah-who now lives with Danny and Joe!

Well-The Cornelia building show was full of surprises. I had an amazing visit from two fellows who wound up taking Talulah and Marishka home with them. Many other friends and family members came out to the show as well. I shared the studio space of Gregory Milne and his Raku pottery business. Greg also had three text pieces on display and, not surprisingly, sold the Shakespeare piece: gregmilne.com. I learned about the ins and outs of working an art show-and shared the building with many talents. I enjoy being part of this community and have dreamt about it from the time I was an adolescent. I thank all of my supporters and although I don't have any other shows planned, I do plan to launch an online store, as well as approach some local businesses about selling my work. I'll keep you posted.

MUK

here we are!

Stripey Guy and Blubell are waiting patiently to go to the show next week and meet all of you in person.

Marishka

Hi I'm Marishka! At $45 these shnoogies are a steal!

Finis

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/Rydg5CAl0WI/AAAAAAAAABY/QlLNQE_cU3I/s320/finished_wisteria.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127173233692758370" />
She's done!

Welcome Wisteria

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/RyZ5YyAl0VI/AAAAAAAAABQ/cLsZKifQXuQ/s320/Wisteria-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126918692455960914" />

I've been working hard all day to complete this doll. She has been a joy. All that is left is some work on the removable dress, and hair! She has nicely stuffed uniform arms and legs, a curvy bod, lavender scented belly, big blue heart and a kind face. Wisteria is a climbing shrub of the pea family!!! More to follow in her family of friends. Ask me about details. She is roughly 16" high, and $115, but prices do vary slightly. Buttons and small parts-but not on all-although Muk dolls are recommended for those over three years of age, and generally for mature enthusiasts.

evolution/metamorphosis

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/RyIHciAl0UI/AAAAAAAAABI/rxzirMulwzQ/s320/dollseriesOCT.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125667512648061250" />

The dolls today. It's been a long time since I created a series of dolls, but the time has arrived. They are coming as a group-but all retain their autonomy and individual characteristics. Some features will include lavender scented bellies, removable dresses/garments, soft, unbleached cotton batting, elfin booties, and embroidered faces. Updates coming regularly, so check back often. Keep in mind that I work in a smoke free environment, with a long-haired cat.

MUK LUV!
Sara

Vintage 28 Workshop

The Children's garment dyed line that I work for, Vintage 28 Workshop, participated in the Red Hot Chicago Fashion show Thursday October 11th. I designed the pink tunic, and the dress on the girl who you can't see. these are part of our Spring line for 2008. The event was VIP with cocktails, the show, a dinner, live music, and lots of VIP folks of whom I spoke to about 3 or so. My boss walked down the runway as the "designer" and his name was announced, while two enormous video screens displayed his picture. None of my Vintage 28 pictures came out that well, but I have other pics up on my flickr page, and more to come next month when I get more bandwidth.

muk in action

I am currently on a role completing many variations of my ribbon pin design. They have collected a bunch of textile family heirlooms like handerchiefs, crib covers, beaded sweaters etc. and I am going to piece them together on a backing fabric that is 7' by 7'. The chuppa is a tent that the couple is married under so it is a central part of the Jewish wedding ceremony. At our first meeting we discussed the layout and I looked at their artifacts--we also discussed me making a sample to judge the time it will take, hence the price for me doing the work. (It also gives a nice visual and textural way for them to say what they like and dislike about the work prior to me doing anything on their piece.)

Today I sat down with a piece of linen and a bundle of lace and began to assemble the sample--this work was done in one hour and is about a sixth of the size of the actual chuppa--it has raw edges and the stitches are visible on the underside. Also, it is not compiled of the actual materials-only similar ones-but it was an enjoyable excercise and will hopefully help the clients visualize their final product.

New Skirt!!!!!!!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/RoVWUpmQZVI/AAAAAAAAAAs/wXbn5AFV61I/s320/plumageskirt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5081562667321156946" />So yeah, I did get a degree in fashion design-and I have a job-but what about my own designs? Well I figured a good way to start would be to use the resources of the patterns I already have. They were developed over the course of roughly 24 weeks- and I should really maximize their potential right? right–so I recently gave my friend version #1 of this skirt, and then, using fabric I had bought after receiving my 3rd paycheck–I created this new skirt! Plus, I feel the momentum to continue forward--afterall at Vogue-buying remnant fabric is a wonderful lottery--you never know what you're going to find--and it's always 1/2 off the original per yard price. So one-of-a-kind Muk Designs of a different sort are emerging from the home studio-perhaps-I'll build up an inventory for SALE--in the near future-put in your orders now because you never know where whimsy, and distraction will lead me next.....

Piece by Piece Book and Quilt Squares

I'm at it agin. Q and H and Jorps and I are participating in a self-imposed art-swap. I got a bunch of stuff in a bag and I've begun work on the task of using them in any way I choose to make art. So I have decided to make a Log Cabin Quilt (major long time comin'). I am incorporating some of the found objects into the quilt: feathers, a felt 2006 calendar, run-over Superman glasses, and a trashed little girl's Gap purse...but the main excercise for me, the inspiration and achievement is the piecing, and assembling and eventual quilting of an "art quilt", an art-for-art's sake inspired textile project that pieces together fragments of this world into a fabric of color and expression, including proof of how even trash can be used effectively to make a visually stimulating assemblage.

biking

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/RjZDzW1ZIgI/AAAAAAAAAAk/e6mRa8RldGQ/s320/smalljorpaard.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5059305780979245570" />
I know this is a sewing blog so be patient and it will all come full circle. So, another year another birthday-May 1st is my birthday week, but I got a gift early this year. A new bike! which you could also say is late since I had planned on getting a bike last year, so a year late and a week early I am all about the biking. So far I've biked four out of 8 days and counting! (that's 50% for you math folks) On the day a got my bike, last Saturday I rode over to our good friends' neighborhood and we celebrated the coming of Spring which in Chicago is just like Summer only with cooler nights and more rain. Luckily, I have a lot of friends who can do neat tricks, they make and play their own drums, bake bagels and bread, and do Thai massage! perfect since I am beginning to work out muscles that only knew how to sleep and sit in various chairs, sofas, el trains, and reclining positions until I got my brand new bike. So with new positions my weary legs especially beniftted from an impromptu massage which was like a stationary work out. The massage therapist taught some poses and body work to my husband and I and asked in exchange for look alike aardvarks (one of my specialties...of me and my hubby) plus a bonus gift, yet to be determined–so here is a work-in-progress image of the aardvark meant to be my husband...more to come. Point is, crafty friends can barter one craft for another and facilitate the use and practise of one another's "gifts".

frenzy

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/RgWMxKdqjZI/AAAAAAAAAAU/1oKoIiBeTYY/s320/shirt32407.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5045593733788765586" />
Sometimes you have it and sometimes you don't. I am referreing to the urge, momentum, inspiration, motivation and courage to create. Finally, finally, after what has seemed like many moons, I have begun to sew-and as per usual when the urge sets in the need to sew becomes insatiable. I attribute this new stage to several things that eventually built up enough energy, and willpower to leap into action. 1) hibernation, and incubation. I had a long period after the last quarter of school up until now-where I have been essentailly both resting, and incubating-mulling ideas around-but not feeling the appropriate impulse. 2) inspirational materials. I am constantly surrounded by magazines, movies, other crafters, websites, and exhibitions. I take in information all the time--but it takes a certain combination of mulled ideas and what I see as courage to finally spring into action. Specifically, I think the movie "The Science of Sleep" led to some action on my part. It is full of creative stop motion animation, and soft-sculpture objects that are so me! The movie completey validates these objects and makes them part of the focal point of the film. I collect information over time from these sources and then when the urge hits I see the input turned into concrete work and the data pours out of me in the form of a hand dyed linen, and ripstop nylon vagina (incorporated into a larger wall piece), cool fleece, and ribbed cotton sportswear, with a definite nod to the Safety line: see Rebecca Turbow. As well as other totally unique fabric formations that I aim to make part of an on-going practice of fabric-art-works for enjoyment and sale. So I am basically ecstatic!

maid in the mist

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qcz3ovSkQK4/RgMJNqdqjYI/AAAAAAAAAAM/0fQI_SxmFRE/s320/stetchandsew.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044886137926749570" />
so I bought this book for a dollar at the Library called S-T-R-E-T-C-H and Sew-sewing for knit fabric published in the late 60's/early 70's it has great illustrations and teaches the reader how to sew on their home sewing machine-knits! which at the time were just beginning to be made. This book is totally out of date and requires that the reader also own the patterns being referred to in the book as well as all kinds of products created by the Author, Ann Person, because at the time what she was doing was totally revolutionary. So guess where you can find the patterns that correlate with the projects in the book? Thats right, all over the friggin' internet--everywhere as if they weren't out of print and easily 30 years old! OLDER. Older than me. This book, this idea, these patterns are all older than me (and most of you)--and perhaps that is why they are so intriguing. I feel like an Archeologist uncovering a lost artifact and even though just a few weeks ago I forgot what an Archeologist was ('nother story, pretty short--The word came up in conversation and at the time-it just didn't register as something familiar what can I say?) Anyway now, today I am an archeologist, a sewing-scout if you will ready to take on the past-and reenact it right here in my own home...
